Women in Real Estate Survey – March 2014

Those participating in the survey included Head of New Business Implementation, Head of Strategic Capital Management, Senior Development Manager, Principal Valuer, Vice President Real Estate, Real Estate Analyst, Portfolio Manager, Estates Manager and more.

Advice for employers

When respondents were asked what advice employers could do to improve the number of women in senior leadership positions, the survey responses included, ‘Recruit externally rather than promote internally’, ‘encourage more flexible working’, ‘proactively encouraging female staff to apply and mentoring would help’ and ‘skills based training around confidence, presentation skills would be useful.’

In addition, over 73% of respondents expressed an interest in signing up to a female mentoring system with fellow industry professionals.

When asked whether their employer had internal initiatives to support women in the workplace, 62% of respondents said yes, which suggests there is still more work to be done.

Time for negotiation

In the last 12 months, 68% of survey respondents had not directly negotiated a salary increase with their employers. From our experience, is advantageous to be clear with your employer on what your career goals are and to clarify what their expectations are in order for you to progress. After all, if you don’t ask, you don’t get!
