Interview with Lucy, Consultant from the London General Practice Team

Lucy CookHow did you get into recruitment?
I trained as a Chartered Surveyor originally (MRICS) and so I visited the Cobalt website to see what roles were available. Whilst I was on the website I noticed that Cobalt was looking for new Consultants. I thought that the role sounded interesting and could offer me challenges that my role at the time did not, so I submitted my CV and following interviews, was offered the role and I have been at Cobalt for 18 months now.

Which aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?
There are a number of elements that I enjoy as every day a different situation is thrown at you, which you have to deal with and so I am constantly learning and being challenged. It is also very satisfying to build up my own business/brand within Cobalt via business development and reputation. Not only am I able to assist candidates and clients in their searches but as a Consultant at Cobalt, I also have great earning potential which provides an exciting element to the role. The harder you work, the stronger your client and candidate relationships become and the more money you can make.

There is also the added element to the role of developing your industry knowledge. The better you know the sector your are working within, the more successful you are likely to be. Building up this knowledge and understanding is an ongoing and evolving part of the role which I find enjoyable and fulfilling.

Is there an element of your role that you find the most challenging?
In recruitment your ‘product’ if you will is people. Inevitably this presents challenges as people sometimes change their mind and do not always behave as you expect. This requires patience, effective management and problem solving abilities. However, as with many parts of the role, as you develop as a consultant you find you have faced similar situations already and are better placed to deal with them.

What do you like most about working at Cobalt Recruitment?
I think a major element of why I like being an employee at Cobalt is its brand. Most people in property have heard of Cobalt, respect our company and are therefore happy to work with you. Client’s use Cobalt as they know we are experts in our fields.

In addition, the people at Cobalt, whilst individual and different, have a common denominator in that they are fun, hard working, knowledgeable and keen to help and work together. It’s definitely a supportive environment to work in.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in recruitment?
I would advise looking at your key personality traits and strengths. If you are a people person who enjoys challenges and is motivated by personal success, recruitment is a career option to look into. I think the best way of ascertaining if you would be successful and enjoy it is to talk to those that are doing it. Ask about their role, what they like or dislike and what a typical week for them involves.
