About the Role
Director of Controls
Location: NYC Metro Area
Salary: 170k to 200k plus bonus and benefits
A fast growing, technology driven mechanical contractor in New York City is seeking a Director of Controls to lead and scale its in house controls department. This is a senior leadership role with full ownership of people, process, and performance across controls, software, and integration with sales, service, and installation teams.
The company is the only mechanical contractor in NYC with a fully in house controls group and a proprietary software platform already generating over $1M in direct application revenue, with significant growth ahead.
Role Overview
The Director of Controls will own the controls department end to end. This includes technical direction, team leadership, hiring, budgeting, standards, and integration with the broader mechanical organization. This is not a support role - controls is a core growth engine and profit center.
You will work directly with ownership and play a key role in scaling the company from approximately $55M in annual revenue toward $200M+.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the in house controls department across sales support, project execution, service, and software integration
Own department strategy, staffing plan, hiring, training, and performance management
Scale the controls team from approximately 6 team members today to 20+ over time
Establish standards for controls design, programming, commissioning, documentation, and field execution
Oversee integration of proprietary controls software with Honeywell BMS platforms
Partner with sales leadership to support estimating, scoping, and client technical strategy
Partner with service and installation teams to ensure seamless project delivery and long term customer success
Serve as senior technical authority for controls, including architecture, sequencing, and system performance
Develop KPIs, workflows, and accountability across the department
Own departmental budget, forecasting, and long term growth planning
Qualifications
Proven experience leading controls, BMS, or building automation teams
Strong background in HVAC controls, boiler systems, and mechanical integration
Experience with Honeywell controls strongly preferred
Demonstrated ability to hire, manage, and develop technical teams
Comfortable owning department level accountability including people, performance, and outcomes
Ability to communicate effectively with ownership, clients, engineers, and field teams
Experience in a contractor, integrator, or design build environment preferred
What Makes This Role Different
True director level ownership - not a PM role with a fancy title
In house proprietary controls software already generating real revenue
Direct access to ownership and influence on company wide strategy
Controls is a profit center, not a support function
Rare opportunity to build and lead a department inside a high growth mechanical contractor
Interview Process
The first interview will be directly with the company owner. Candidates will be walked through the proprietary controls platform and asked technical questions to assess system understanding and leadership capability.
