About the Role
Installations Commissioning Engineer (HVAC / Boiler Systems)
Mount Vernon, NY - Field work across NYC & Westchester
Full-time, In-person
$110,000-$140,000 base plus incentive compensation
About the Role
A licensed Master Plumber and General Contractor serving NYC & Westchester, is hiring a Commissioning Engineer to plan, execute, and own the startup and commissioning of their mechanical installations. You'll take each installed heating and cooling plant from pre-startup readiness through first fire, functional testing, and verified operation, then document the finished system and hand a fully commissioned plant to the owner and the service team.
This is a hands-on role. You will be in the mechanical room operating equipment, taking readings, running combustion tests, and verifying control circuits, not directing the work from a desk.
What You'll Do
- Build the commissioning plan for each installed system during technical review, including functional tests, KPIs, and required data
- Review schematics and the Sequence of Operations for HVAC, steam, hydronic, and domestic hot water systems; raise RFIs before installation
- Walk installations to confirm hardware, sensors, and wiring are complete and ready for startup
- Own the go/no-go call on startup readiness and manage the punch list until the site is ready
- Energize and start boilers, pumps, and controls; confirm proper operation of all inputs and outputs
- Run combustion analysis on a calibrated analyzer and record O2, CO, stack temperature, and combustion efficiency
- Verify safeties and interlocks, including LWCO, high-limit, gas pressure switches, flame safeguard, and proof-of-closure
- Troubleshoot line and low-voltage control circuits and set up test instrumentation for the commissioning phase
- Prove system sequencing, staging, and controls, including the company's proprietary building automation platform, perform per design
- Produce Commissioning Reports and Boiler Room Settings documentation for the owner and service team
What You'll Bring
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred, or equivalent hands-on heating systems experience
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with commercial boilers, burners, pumps, and controls
- Working knowledge of NYC steam and hydronic heating systems
- Comfortable working hands-on in an active mechanical room
- Ability to read mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, and a written Sequence of Operations
- Strong written communication skills
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites across NYC and Westchester
- OSHA SST certification
Preferred:
- 3+ years of startup and commissioning experience on boiler or heating-plant installations
- Understanding of combustion analysis and optimization
- Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS) and remote-monitoring platforms
- Knowledge of LL87 and LL97 retro-commissioning and reporting requirements
Why This Role

- Base salary $110,000-$140,000, commensurate with experience, plus incentive compensation
