The growing importance of environmental FM careers

Given the growing global concern about the destruction of natural resources, it’s important that businesses implement sustainability practices as best they can. To reduce the environmental impact of any business, it must first be understood exactly how that business engages with the natural environment. That’s why environmental managers are increasingly important for overseeing the environmental performance of organisations, by analysing things such as waste management and promoting sustainability at all levels of the business.

More companies are integrating carbon reduction strategies into their business model in order to comply with UK’s long-term plan of drastically reducing emissions by 2050. The reduction of the carbon footprint in any business can have a positive impact on the wider problem of emissions. There are many ways an environmental manager can provide significant value to a company. They are responsible for developing environmental strategies, a set of action plans to help create the right conditions for environmental sustainability. Also, the management of renewable energy sources that have minimal impact on the environment is one of the key benefits of having an environmental manager.

Society’s shared interest in sustainability has grown immensely over the years. However, some companies may find it challenging to meet the requirements of high-sustainability. In-house environmental managers are important for helping companies meet the expectations of stakeholders and improving regulatory performance, so organisations can avoid being penalised for noncompliance with environmental legislation. The Environmental Agency has announced that companies will face penalties if they fail to comply with the energy auditing regulations. Non-compliant organisations might have to pay as much as 50,000 in fines.

The 2050 target – reducing emissions by 80% has increased the focus on energy efficiency in facilities management. Many companies have created their own energy divisions. For example, Apple created an energy subsidiary, ‘Apple Energy’ and trading company BAM set up BAM Energy Ltd within its FM division. Reducing carbon in buildings has become extremely important for the long-term risks around resource availability.

The less resources there are available, the more expensive they might become. Environmental managers can ensure these companies uphold and find new ways of going green, as well helping companies save money through managing energy expenditure. Environmental management professionals need to be experts on environmental policy and legislation, and should be able to determine the level of work required and what types of resources are needed.

Failing to work towards environmental sustainability in business is rapidly becoming hugely disadvantageous in numerous ways. It’s a significant role that can have huge benefits on both the business and the individual.
