About the Role
About the Controller role
Key responsibilities:
- Oversee and ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial reporting and accounting operations, including general ledger management, job costing, accounts payable and receivable, payroll processing, and month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Manage payroll processing for a union workforce, ensuring accuracy and compliance with union payroll requirements and collective bargaining agreements.
- Collaborate with the CFO to develop annual budgets and provide ongoing monitoring of actual performance against budgeted targets, including project-level cost tracking.
- Manage all accounting activities related to WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, and contract revenue recognition across active construction projects.
- Implement and manage robust accounting systems, ensuring the integrity of financial data, streamlining processes, and optimizing the use of technology. Evaluate and recommend improvements to existing systems and lead the implementation of new systems as required.
- Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and potential areas of improvement. Ensure compliance with accounting standards (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
- Establish and maintain a strong system of internal controls to safeguard company assets, ensure accuracy of financial records, and compliance with accounting principles and regulatory requirements. Monitor and assess risks, develop control procedures, and coordinate internal and external audits.
- Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback. Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
- Prepare position papers for external auditors to reflect the accounting treatment used by the company.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA certification is highly preferred.
- Minimum of 10+ years of progressive accounting leadership experience within the construction industry.
- Hands-on experience with union payroll, including familiarity with collective bargaining agreements and fringe benefit reporting.
- In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, relevant tax regulations, and ERP accounting systems (job cost/WIP experience essential).
- Proven ability to lead and manage a team effectively, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data, perform financial modeling, and provide strategic insights.
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting.
