About the Role
Architectural Design Manager
Location: Great Neck, New York
Position Overview
A privately held real estate development firm is seeking an Architectural Design Manager to lead the technical delivery of large-scale, ground-up multifamily high-rise developments. This role is responsible for managing projects from Design Development (DD) through Construction Administration (CA), ensuring seamless coordination, technical rigor, and faithful execution of design intent.
The ideal candidate is a highly experienced architectural professional with deep technical expertise in high-rise residential construction and a strong owner-side mindset focused on quality, efficiency, and execution.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Quality Control
- Lead and direct architectural teams to ensure proprietary standards for unit layouts, common areas, and amenity programming are consistently executed
- Serve as the steward of design quality, ensuring optimal planning, constructability, and efficient use of space
- Review and manage architectural deliverables at all phases to ensure alignment with project goals, budgets, and schedules
Consultant Coordination
- Manage coordination among architectural, MEP, structural, civil, and specialty consultants during DD and CD phases
- Ensure integration of preferred systems and methodologies specific to multifamily high-rise developments
- Identify and resolve design and coordination conflicts proactively
Construction Administration
- Lead CA-phase meetings and manage RFIs, submittals, and design clarifications
- Conduct frequent site visits to ensure construction aligns with design intent and approved documents
- Review and evaluate change orders resulting from design modifications to protect design integrity, schedule, and budget
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Report to the Design Director on project status, risks, and key issues
- Maintain close collaboration with in-house Project Management and Interior Design teams
- Ensure continuity of design vision from building envelope through interior detailing
Qualifications
Experience
- 5-10 years of professional experience in architecture
- Strong background in ground-up, high-rise multifamily residential development
Technical Expertise
- Expert knowledge of building codes, zoning regulations, and ADA requirements
- Comprehensive understanding of complex building systems, including MEP and structural coordination
Software Proficiency
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and Bluebeam
Leadership & Communication
- Proven ability to lead meetings, manage multidisciplinary consultant teams, and perform effectively under aggressive development and construction schedules
- Strong communication skills with the ability to represent ownership interests throughout the design and construction process
